From the Architect: “Sarah and Evan, mother and father to Barney and Eddie, approached Downie North to create a brand new addition to their single degree Federation period dwelling in Mosman. The rear of the home which might kind the main focus of the design initially contained a small kitchen and meals areas, pseudo playroom, and laundry. As avid cooks and entertainers they sought to create a big kitchen and casual eating and household space that supported a ‘no fuss,’ informal strategy to residing that engendered a way of ease. Very importantly they sought a design that made probably the most of its facet and environs in order that they might passively function the home all year long.
“Pushed by shared values of connectedness, site-specificity, place making and passive design, Home for BEES encompasses a refined addition instantly related to the backyard. An acronym of the shoppers’ names, and a reference to their native bee hive, Home for BEES is a moniker that encapsulates the shopper centered, collaborative design course of and final result for a household of 4 to their Federation dwelling and backyard in Mosman.
“Conceived as a backyard room, the design instantly grounds and orients the occupants towards their backyard. Kitchen, residing, and eating areas are calmly contained by a floating roof, folded to seize northern mild and facilitate the seize of easterly breezes. Structural simplicity and legibility dissolves the southern and japanese edge, with banks of sliding doorways totally retracting to allow a seamless reference to the backyard.”
